Hosting FAQ

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is the process of putting your web site on a web server or web host, so everyone connected to the Internet can see it. If you have a permanent connection to the Internet you could host your web site on your own computer, but that is in general not a good idea. A good web host is a real server in a datacenter with a fast high bandwidth connection to the Internet. And, to make sure you can move your web site to another web host, if necessary, you need a web hosting provider that supports domain hosting.

Will you place any ads on my site?

Not at all. ScribeStream does not place any advertisements on your site whatsoever. No banners, no annoying pop-ups, nothing.

What servers do you run?

Our minimum server configuration is: Intel Xeon Quad Processors, 4 - 8 GB RAM, 100 Mbps Connectivity, Network attached storage, RAID 10

Domain FAQ

What is a domain name?

Domain names are the familiar, easy to remember names for computers on the Internet (such as internic.net). They correspond to a series of numbers (called Internet Protocol numbers) that serve as routing addresses on the World Wide Web. Domain names are used generally as a convenient way of locating information and reaching others on the Internet.

What does "register a domain name" mean?

The Internet domain name system (DNS) consists of a directory, organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet. When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate during the period the registration is in effect.

How will I be able to tell if my desired domain name is already taken?

When you begin registering a domain name, we will search the domain name database (known as "WHOIS") to see if your requested domain name is available.

How long does a domain name registration last? Can it be renewed?

We provide you with the ability to register and renew domain registrations in one-year increments.

How much does a domain name registration name cost?

Your domain name registration is included in the package price.

How long does it take to register or transfer a domain name?

It will take us just a few minutes to register a domain, but it might not be available on the Internet for up to 48 hours. This is due to the fact that Internet DNS databases are updated only once a day, causing the delay.

What if I already have my domain name?

If you already have your domain name we will get your Domain Name Servers updated from wherever you are hosting your website now to our Domain Name Servers. Once you purchase the website package we will provide additional information (in your Site Owner Center) on exactly how to transfer your hosting over to us.

Can I keep my domain name if I want to move my hosting to another company?

Yes you can. You will however need to move your files and change the pointer for your domain. You will also have to set up all of the email accounts on the new host.

What is involved with transferring a domain name?

The process for transferring a domain name is different for many companies. If you received an account number and password when you registered your current domain name, that information will make the transfer go faster. For older domain names we will put a transfer through and, with the acceptance from your current provider, it should go through in a matter of days. When we put the request through we make sure that your web pages are ready to be presented on our servers and your e-mail is working as it is now.
